Opening Friday 7 December 2012, 7–9pm

With work by Duende’s last artist in residence:
Kathrin Borer (CH)
Hyungji Park (KR)

Opening Friday 7 December 7pm - 9pm
Open Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December 2pm - 6pm

Kathrin Borer
Her drawings, texts and objects appear reduced in form and appeal showing us precise settings of juxtaposed creatures and conditions. Some are intense, others playful – they show scenarios outside of the ordinary life from which they draw from. Those obsessions tend to reverberate in our very own spaces after we have left the show.
www.kathrinborer.ch

Hyungji Park
In her painting she has an interest in interpreting her everyday experience into the elements of painting, such as paint’s physical properties, brush marks, colors, layers and the transformation of images. Taking motifs from daily urban life, her work playful explores imagery and the language of painting, experimenting with the spectrum and autonomy of the medium of painting. Drawing inspiration from her new environment at Duende, the works in the presentation are based on experience and observation of her studio space and its surroundings. It includes wall painting, (canvas) paintings and drawings that are site-specifically created to present in the studio.

Friday September 21, 2012, 7–10pm

Nicolas Carrier (FR), Jolien Kramer (NL), Flora Moscovici (FR) and Yuya Suzuki (JP)

The Last One Before The Break is a one night exhibition that brings together the work of Duende’s current artists-in-residence with that of invited artists Jolien Kramer and Flora Moscovici. The exhibition explores our relations to imagination and fiction through minimal gestures. From installations that shift the architecture of this old school to videos that play the memories of childhood again, this exhibition presents new works created for this context of a summer break.

Nicolas Carrier (FR) directs videos that explore the possibilities of fiction during dead times. He is inspired by isolated and abandoned places that he uses as set and where he creates a moment for boredom, roving and games. By the use of minimal actions and repetitions performed during a light and brief shoot, he introduces some poetry and a new temporality cut from our quotidian world.

The work of Jolien Kramer (NL) revolves around the following sentences: When there is no space, no landscape, then what does this data mean? What surrounds me is what I am. I want time without time. Distance from our own thinking makes us always alone. I was so deep in my time that I now feel misplaced without me.
For the exhibition in Duende she will show installation of paper and drawing, that consumes the space.

Flora Moscovici (FR) transforms places via site-specific interventions that are based on how a given space’s architectural particularities sparks her imagination thereby instigating a fantasised space. She creates a second skin of colour for the architecture, playing with movement to express emotions and imagine the walk of the visitor. The relation of scale between the artwork, always adapted to the size of the building, and the visitors permits them to enter a state of reverie.

Yuya Suzuki (JP) mainly uses drawing and video to make works that establish a space in which the viewer and the world around them are in dialogue.

Opening: 22 August 2012, 19:00

Paula Petroll and Sjoerd Westbroek

22.08.- 24.08. 2012, 13.00- 18.00

Double Blind brings together the work of Duende’s current artist-in-residence Paula Petroll with that of invited artist Sjoerd Westbroek. Borrowing the title for the exhibition from a specific way to set-up an experiment, both artists seek to explore the spatial qualities of drawing in a concise back-and-forth movement between the three-dimensional qualities of a drawing’s surface and its abilities to function as an arrow towards the physical space.

Drawing is at the core Paula Petroll’s practice and she uses already existing drawings as a starting point to negotiate an intricate language of rehearsing and combination in an ever- evolving kaleidoscopic movement of zooming in and out. She is interested in how drawing can effect the space they are installed in as well how they can be used as a mnemonic device to suggest and hold other spaces in an attempt to find the system that explains everything, the structure that subtitles all phenomena through repetition until non-defined non-sense turns into non-plus non-description. Petroll studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Massey University, New Zealand. In august 2012 she will undertake a POT Mini-Residency at documenta13 in Kassel.

Using drawing and installation Sjoerd Westbroek (NL, 1979, lives and works in Rotterdam) seeks to create spaces to investigate the relationship between artistic activity and questions concerning representation. On display at Duende is a part of the new installation We Reach The Same End By Discrepant Means. Taking the image of a victorian drawing class as a starting point, the installation brings together works which use different ways of mark making to find a moment in which drawings becomes objects. Using folds and grids the work seeks to explore artistic agency within an everyday conception of creative activity.

Westbroek studied art and art education in Enschede and Arnhem and in 2008 he graduated at the Master Fine Arts programme of the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. Recent exhibitions include The Smooth and the Striated (2010, Huize Frankendael and Nieuw Dakota, Amsterdam) and The Spur of the Moment (2011, Nest, Den Haag). As part of his artistic practice Westbroek works as a teacher at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and is a member of the Rotterdam based artist initiative ADA. From September 2012 he will be an artist in residence at AiR Berlin Alexanderplatz, together with the other members of ADA, supported by Mondriaan Foundation.

Deadline July 15, 2012

Duende is looking for people interested in a temporary studio. Duende is a self-run and independent, artist-run cooperative housed in a former school building that provides circa 45 studios where independent artists, designers and architects carry out their work on a professional basis.

Duende has the intention to function as a platform, providing space and opportunity for local, national and international practices to meet and influence the local circuit through the actual artistic practice. As a cooperative, Duende is looking back on a 25-year history with a broad range of activities and manifestations. Duende is also running a guest studio program, providing three large studios with a separate living space, available for foreign artists for a period of three months, and a smaller space for curators and critics. Duende cooperates with other comparable artist-communities as well as local institutions such as TENT., CBK, Piet Zwart Institute, and others such as museums and galleries.

Temporary studios are regularly available for new candidates. The rental price for this studio is circa 230 euros for 60 m2 / €300 for circa 90 m2, prices are incl. BTW.

Candidates who want to apply for a studio at Duende do need to show that they clearly have a professional and active practice, and that they want to be engaged and prepared to initiate activities. They also need to have a Dutch BTW (tax) number, be actively supportive towards the ambitions and aims of Duende and if and where possible, contribute to these aims. For tasks such as running the organization, maintenance, board members, accommodating the guests, and other activities, Duende continuously needs its members to actively contribute and initiate. Be aware that candidates without a (personal) Dutch BTW number will not be able to apply; no exceptions can be made!

Interested? Please send relevant documentation material (only digital (!) portfolios’ or material will be accepted, publications and / or dvd’s in case of videowork) plus CV, BTW number, and contact details before July 15, 2012.

Here The Ground Wavers Not: Dico Kruijsse, Paula Petroll, Frédéric Sanchez, Emily Whitebread

29 June 2012 at 7pm

Here The Ground Wavers Not is a one night only exhibition that brings together the work of Duende’s current artists-in-residence with that of invited artist Dico Kruijsse. The exhibition traces shared notions of measurement and classification that lie within the artists’ practices. From artworks that charmingly demarcate the space they inhabit to performance that embodies the spirit of the natural philosopher in deciding how things can go together this exhibition showcases artist who visually navigate the exhibition space and build personal taxonomies of the everyday.

The work of Dico Kruijsse can be seen as a search for the undiscovered qualities of everyday actions, materials and objects. In site-specific installation, sculpture, drawing and video he communicates a playful way of looking at the world surrounding him. Using a formal way of presentation, his findings move from random things to objects for contemplation and personal reflection. Kruijsse received a BA in Fine Arts at the WDKA in 2009. Projects an exhibitions include, The emperor Has Chosen in Shanghai China, A Metalogue On Playing at Premises in Norway, Appeal to Probability, Here and There at Het Wilde Weten. In 2011 he was artist-in-residence at Hellebou, a remote cabin in the Norwegian woods.

Drawing is at the core Paula Petroll’s practice and she uses it as a tool to explore space. She is interested in how drawing can effect the space they are installed in as well how they can be used as a mnemonic device to suggest other spaces. Using intricate geometric line drawings and, more recently, light installation Petroll creates subtle inventions that aim to change our perception of a given space. Petroll studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Massey University, New Zealand. In august 2012 she will undertake a POT Mini-Residency at documenta13 in Kassel.

Fred Sanchez’s past work took minimal geometric painting and added notions of the everyday, for example monochrome canvas that were painted the same colour and size as the plasterboards plates you find in your local DIY store. This way of creating artworks questions how abstraction can also be representation. For Sanchez work and play are also important as he chooses to divide his practice into periods of time when he makes ‘serious’ work and other periods when he produces works as a past-time. He uses this division to give himself the freedom to create pieces in a wide variety of forms. This divided practice has led him to reflect on the dynamic between the desire for adventure and the need for stability. His past exhibition include Cosmotopia at Espace Le Commun in Geneva and Xin Chào! at Où, lieu d’exposition pour l’art actuel in Marseille.

For Emily Whitebread’s writing is an integral part of her practice, which also includes video, audio, printing, live performance and photography. She is fascinated by science, space, time, sci-fi and technology. Her recent work stems from an intrigue into the nature of scientists and explorers and their impact on the history of the museum. For this exhibition Whitebread will present The ever-expanding natural museum that can be contributed to and examined, a live performance performed by the actor Leo Hogenboom. The work explores signals from the sun, the romance of navigation and colour light tubes. Whitebread has an MFA in Art Writing from Goldsmiths University. Recent Exhibitions include For the Love of Books at Huyton Gallery in Liverpool and Testspace Bonanza at South London Gallery in London.

Opening Monday June 11, 2012 at 7pm

On Monday 11th of June Duende opens its doors to the exhibition ‘Prototyping Future Habitats’ which is produced and organized in cooperation with Libby de Haas.
With Maud Janssen, Krystel Kapteijns, Maurice Leeflang, Loran ten Lohuis, Michaela Mertlová, Kim van Nederpelt, Angela Oudshoorn, Sarita Pannekoek, Alexia Regamey, Lisa van Scherpenzeel, Ayla Stomp and Marlous ten Wolde from Willem de Kooning Academie, Rotterdam.

‘Prototyping Future Habitats’ refers to ‘life in the future’. It discusses further scientific and social developments that come with extreme scenarios translated into a serie of prototypes. They propose solutions by redefining the problem; is it true that the future becomes more artificial and are we going to use more re-used products and recycled materials?

Sils Project Space is proud to announce its forthcoming exhibition, The Self-Moving Number. This exhibition brings together four artists whose work deals with notions of time, space and materiality. Aesthetics from different time periods, as well as questioning the stuff the moon’s made of and gifs steeped in gestalt are presented here as a survey that looks at the object. How do we associate with it? What is its role in the wider cultural field? How does an object’s composition dictate how we view it?

Tossing around with a chair in the corridor
Presentations by Simon Kentgens and Duende-residents Tetsushi Higashino and Jean-Charles de Quillacq.

Tetsushi Higashino and Jean-Charles de Quillacq will present the exhibition ‘Tossing around a chair in the corridor’ at Duende. During their residency period they became familiar with the work of the Rotterdam based artist Simon Kentgens, with which they found interesting connections. Higashino is fascinated by Kentgens’ artistic approach towards our daily life surroundings. Quillacq will react on Kentgens’ work with a performance during the exhibition’s opening.

Tetsushi Higashino (JP)
Tetsushi Higashino regards himself as an ‘unproductive production activist’, apparently his definition of an artist. His works make visible the logic of this notion and these metaphorical visions often derive from things that subliminally intervene in our daily lives. They transform the ordinary world we overlook into one of the most extraordinary nonsense.

Jean-Charles de Quillacq (FR)
Jean-Charles de Quillacq plays combinatory games by forcing different shapes and materials to make contact, often in an unnatural promiscuity without anything ever merging. This idea of closeness is coupled with resemblance, as in family resemblances, because de Quillacq often roughly reproduces or imitates his previous works for generating new ones, mimicking the lineage of a fake genetic family. Sexual reproduction is not the only organic process that de Quillacq’s works recall, since many of his shapes refer to the digestion and its converted substances. Moreover, his sculptures are hardly fixed and seem to result from simple and daily gestures.

Simon Kentgens (NL)
Simon Kentgens lifts everyday objects out of their normal environment. He creates new references in which they can be viewed. These objects and situations suddenly acquire multiple meanings. They seem to become strange in their new surroundings, as if they have to get used to their recently acquired status as a work of art. To create these unbalancing confrontations Kentgens applies different strategies.

Recently, during Re:Rotterdam, he transformed a former office space using the available materials, such as the door to the room and left over window blinds. A door, slowly revolving, continuously bumped into another open door. This site-specific installation was the reason for Quillacq and Higashino to invite Kentgens for their show at Duende. In this show Kentgens searches for common ground between both their practices.
